Financial Planning Services
I assume you have read a good portion of the site and my resume. At least
read Who Can You Trust - preferably in the book,
No Nonsense
Finance. I'd also suggest How to Find a Financial
Planner. You have to do a LOT of homework before you engage anyone- myself
included. Do not simply trust someone because you like or are familiar with
them- even if they have written a book. Not good enough. That said, I will
put my background up against anyone in the United States.
But I do not "work" like other planners. First and foremost, I do not take
discretionary accounts with your money (you give me the right to trade and
invest as I see fit). I provide information and work with you to define the
risk, reward, and more- specifically addressing economics. Your money must
be important to YOU and you must be willing to work to understand what is
being done and why. I also do not deal with individual securities, save to
review what currently exists. There are numerous no load mutual funds that
can cover almost all conditions. Once again, I point to the economics as
the key to success. If you prefer an allocation designed by computer and
an adviser that will take over the total responsibility for any activity,
I am not your planner.
Secondly, I generally only do comprehensive planning- though it varies in
the coverage due to age, wealth, health, beneficiaries. And most better figure
on doing a budget. If you are unwilling to figure out where your money goes,
there is probably not much I can do to help you. (You cannot believe how
many potential clients refuse to do this or realize the important implications.
So be it. )
Planning Fees- $2,500 minimum. Generally not more than $4,000.
Ongoing services- $4,000 annual minimum paid quarterly in arrears. Percentage
of assets is not necessarily relevant since the work encompasses all areas
of life- real estate, social security, health care, law suits, arbitration,
insurance and most other areas of life. That said, my fees are generally
one third less that other planners- sometimes one half. At this stage of
my life, I only work with people I like and respect. And vice versa.
Location generally not an issue. I have clients outside of California in
Florida, South Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc.
